Accent Bias and Navigating Language Barriers

October 21 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Program Overview

This event will detail what creates an accent, how to make unconscious accent bias more conscious, and ways to navigate language barriers caused by differences in language ability (not accents).

Accents vary widely, and these differences are not always treated equally. In some instances, they can lead to biased treatment in the workplace, either favoring or disadvantaging individuals with certain accents. By the end of this presentation, you will gain the knowledge and skills to understand, address, and prevent accent biases in the workplace.

Learning Outcomes

  • Learning about the fundamentals of accents and dialects, and how accents differ from language
  • Understanding accent bias, the definition of accent and recognizing its various forms in different social and professional contexts
  • Assessing how accent bias affects individuals’ opportunities, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships, which are crucial for retention
  • Developing strategies for clearer, kinder and more respectful communication when there is no shared accent between the speaker and their audience/communication partner
  • Exploring ways to advocate for inclusive practices to reduce the likelihood of accent discrimination
