The vast majority of regulated professions in Newfoundland and Labrador incorporate some form of experience requirement and the CPHR is no different.
The validation of experience criteria is a national requirement administered provincially. This process validates the applicant’s experiential knowledge of the CPHR Competency Framework. The CPHR Competency Framework outlines 44 professional competencies organized in nine functional areas of knowledge that candidates must know to earn their certification. In addition, the Framework also outlines five enabling competencies that complete the professional’s skill set. It also specifies the proficiency level at which each competency is to be demonstrated and how it will be assessed. The competencies and proficiency levels detailed in the Framework represent the minimum requirements to meet CPHR designation.
Applicants experience is validated against their ability to apply theory and knowledge to situations typically encountered by HR professionals. Applicants must have at least three years (36 months) of demonstrated experience in HR at a professional level in at least two Functional Knowledge Areas. In recognition of depth of experience for specialists, experience in one Functional Knowledge Area will be considered sufficient to meet the requirements for those demonstrating proficiency in each of the competencies within that Functional Knowledge Area.
Specific criteria have been established that define what is meant by ‘HR experience’ and `professional level.’ Determinations as to whether a given candidate’s experience meets the established criteria are made by panels constituted from CPHR NL’s Certification Committee.
The prerequisites to submitting an application for the validation of experience are: (1) be a member of CPHR NL in good standing, and (2) pass the NKE.
Applications are accepted throughout the year, but reviewed twice a year. The due dates for the submissions are as follows:
• February 28
• September 30
Applications received on or before these dates will be assessed and the application decision will be communicated in writing within the within six weeks following the review date.
How to self-assess your experience
Note: This criteria changed effective October 2015 to align with CPHR Canada’s modernizations.
There are a number of resources available to help you self-assess your experience, these include: Guide to the Validation of Experience; CPHR Competency Framework; and the Validation of Experience Application Form.
How to apply for the Validation of Experience
The initial step in the validation of experience process is for the applicant to fill out the Validation of Validation of Experience Application Form . The application form requires:
1. a chronological list of HR experience that aligns to the CPHR Competency Framework and excludes leave periods greater than 4 weeks,
2. job descriptions,
3. organizational charts, and
4. job classification codes (if applicable).
Applicants are also asked to relate how their position(s) compare to the criteria for professional level. Applicants must indicate the proportion of their activities that fall within the area of HR and align it to the applicable Functional Knowledge areas. Finally, applicants are asked to provide the name of a reference that would be in a position to validate the experience claimed by the applicant.
Fees are subject to change without notice at the discretion of CPHR NL and CPHR Canada.

To maintain your passing results and the use of the CPHR Candidate title, you will need to maintain your membership with CPHR NL. You will have seven years from the time you passed the NKE to complete the remaining criteria.
