New "Continuing Professional Development" process will replace the current "Recertification" Process - CPHR NL

Effective 2017, Chartered Professionals in Human Resources Newfoundland and Labrador (CPHR NL) along with the Chartered Professionals in Human Resources Canada and its Provincial Member Associations have adopted a new simplified annual Continuing Professional Development (CPD) reporting process to replace the three-year recertification process.

Under the new system, CPHRs will be required to report a minimum of 20 hours of professional development activity in at last two categories annually and 100 hours every rolling three years.

Why have we made this change nationally?
You are certified for life once you attain the CPHR, but the recertification process implied you were only granted the CPHR for another three years. With an annual reporting process, CPHRs are instead committed to growing their competence and professional capabilities on an annual basis in order to maintain the CPHR.

Rolling 100 hours
CPHRs must earn a minimum of 100 hours of CPD activities in any consecutive three (3) year time frame. By December 31 of each year, 100 hours must have been accumulated in the previous three (3) years. For the next year, the oldest of the three (3) years will be discarded and you will need to accumulate enough hours to reach 100 hours for that previous three (3) year period (with a minimum of 20 hours in at least two categories in any given year). We recommend working towards 40 hours each year in order to stay ahead. Failure to meet the CPD requirements through the annual reporting process will result in revocation.

What this means for you

Between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2017, you will have to compete a minimum of 20 CPD hours in at least two categories. By December 31, 2017, you will need to submit a simplified annual CPD log detailing these hours. As previously mentioned we recommend working towards 40 hours per year as you will need to accumulate 100 hours over the 3 year span. With the move to a simplified annual reporting process, we will be moving to an online system which will be accessed through your member profile within CPHR NL’s website. More details to come.

Newly certified CPHRs will not need to submit hours for CPD until December 31st of the next calendar year from certification. Regardless as to whether you received your CPHR in July or December you will not need to submit until the following December. (So if you achieve your CPHR designation in July or December of 2017, you would not need to report the minimum 20 hours until December 31st, 2018).

Upon the launch of the new CPD process current CPHRs not due for renewal until 2017 or later will be credited 40 hours per year prior to 2017 to a maximum of 80 hours. These members will only need to enter 20 hours for the period of January 1st, 2017 – December 31st, 2017 to attain the min 20 hours per year and rolling 100 hours within three years. However, again we encourage them to report more if attained due to the nature of the rolling 100 hours.

Members past due or due to recertify in 2016, need to successfully complete the current recertification process before rolling over into the new CPD process.
