According to the 2017 Canadian Survey of Disability published by Statistics Canada, 22% of the Canadian population aged 15 years and older self-identify as having a disability. These individuals experience barriers in their communities and in the workplace. In Newfoundland and Labrador, this represents almost 114,500 individuals. This session will help employers tap into this largely underutilized talent pool. In this presentation, you will learn about:The basics around creating accessible work environments & building disability confidence and why it is so important. This includes recruitment & hiring, accessibility reviews of physical locations, reasonable workplace adjustments & employee accommodations, and staff training & professional development. |

| Kathy Hawkins is the Manager of InclusionNL: Employer Supports and Services Program of Empower, The Disability Resource Centre. Kathy has an extensive background in providing supports and services to employers interested in creating more inclusive workplace environments for existing and new employees with multiple types of disabilities. Kathy is an active member of the International Association of Accessibility Professionals, sits on the Board of the NL Association of the Deaf, and is currently the President of the DisAbled Women’s Network of Canada. Kathy has expertise in building accessible websites and holds professional certification in this area from the University of South Australia. |
