Session Topic

Have you ever encountered a new idea or fad in HR only for it to appear familiar? Topics like quiet quitting, hybrid work, or even burnout are cast by experts as ‘top trends to look out for’ each year. However, are they really all that new? This session takes a deep dive into techniques of evidence-based management, particularly developing skills for rapid evidence assessment, to explore if what we are being asked to consider ‘new’ or ‘innovation’ is actually repackaged ideas from yesteryear. The objective of this interactive session is to develop critical thinking skills to appreciate HR as an evolving field.

About the Facilitator

Dr. Nicholous Deal, PhD, CIM, CPHR, SHRM-CP

Assistant Professor, Department of Business and Tourism, Mount Saint Vincent University

Dr. Nicholous (Nick) Deal is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Business and Tourism at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax. He has taught a variety of courses in strategic human resource management, nonprofit leadership, and communication across multiple universities in Atlantic Canada. His wealth of teaching experiences has been recognized by his students as “Professor of the Year” three times. Nick considers himself a lifelong learner of people with an interest in decision making. Recently, Nick has used evidence-based management principles to explore the veracity of so-called ‘new’ HR trends like quiet quitting. His research has focused on the historical context of knowledge and how ‘new’ HR ideas might not be quite so new after all.
